Louis Vuitton cabin trunk c.1889

Superb Louis Vuitton cabin trunk of 1889 entirely covered with leather. This very nice piece is protected by leather edges and is equipped with three brass clasps stamped Louis Vuitton. The central lock is a rather rare clasp, among the first used by the trunk maker in the 1890's, with the famous throat closure system. The address of the Louis Vuiton store at the time is engraved on the brass.

We understand that this object has traveled a lot thanks to two superb shipping labels - the first indicating a trip in the hold of a large ocean liner, and the second a departure for DAKAR on the African continent.

The trunk is equipped with two Louis Vuitton stamped brass handles, with two leather loops for a reinforcing strap and four Louis Vuitton wheels. The bottom is protected by zinc to prevent moisture from damaging the contents of the trunk.

The interior is covered with beige linen, with red ribbons stretched to make the padding. There is also the superb Louis Vuitton label with the serial number and addresses of the time.

Very good condition : The trunk is overall in very good condition for its age, with some marks on the outer leather and on the inner canvas. Superb patina of the leather. The restoration of a leather loop during one of its trips has simply damaged a little the interior label of the manufacturer.

The cabin trunks are 33cm high to fit under the bunk in an ocean liner cabin.
