Louis Vuitton trunk c.1912

Beautiful 1912 Louis Vuitton hat trunk covered in orange Vuittonite canvas and protected by leather trim. The canvas has changed color over the years, so today's trunk is almost entirely yellow. Only the parts protected from the sun or the elements have remained orange (underside of the trunk and inner edge). The patina created by the passage of time means that we can now present you with an unusual trunk in a superb color.

The trunk is also fitted with brass jewelry, with original leather handles on each side. The original owner's initials "F.P" are painted on each side.

Underneath are 4 castors stamped "LV" and the recessed bottom with lathing. The original orange color is clearly visible underneath.

The inside of the trunk is covered in unbleached cotton canvas, with attractive padding at the top. It also features the Louis Vuitton authenticity label, with serial number.

This trunk was originally used by a woman to store her hats. A large ribbon cage could be found inside, allowing hats of all sizes and types to be safely stored in the trunk. Unfortunately, it is common today for these trunks to be stripped of their original fittings.

The trunk is in very good condition for its age, with a few marks on the exterior lining and a few stains on the interior.

LOUIS VUITTON HATS TRUNKS FOR WOMAN

"Women's hat trunks are perhaps the only trunks on which fashion has any serious influence. The real jewels which leave the hands of our Parisian milliners every day vary so much and so often in shape and size, that the old mushroom system has had to be abandoned for the cage model which can accommodate hats, large or small, without fear of deterioration" (Exhibition report, Turin 1911).

Invented by Louis Vuitton at the end of the 19th century, these "paradise" cages considerably improved travel conditions for women at the time. They ensured that women could leave without the slightest risk of damaging their precious hats. Some cages of this type could hold up to 60 hats!

The Louis Vuitton trunks for decoration

If you still can't travel with these hat trunks, today they're highly sought-after to decorate a bedroom or living room. The format is perfectly suited to a bedside table, or placed against an armchair as a small side table.

The volume is much less "bulky" than a classic trunk, and the proportions are often very interesting. What's more, the inner cage allows you to store sheets or blankets more easily than in a large compartmentalized trunk.
